NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPY

Femme Bodyworks is a woman-centered mobile massage practice founded with the aim of combining heart-centered touch with the science of Neuromuscular Therapy. I approach the body as an integrated whole as opposed to a group of muscles and connective tissue to be manipulated. My goal is always to draw the client's attention to the mind-body connection and the patterned behaviors that often cause us muscle tension, misalignment and, eventually, chronic pain.

What is Neuromuscular Therapy?

Neuromuscular Therapy is the use of static pressure on specific myofascial Trigger Points points to relieve pain. This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons and connective tissue) to balance the central nervous system. This treatment is geared toward relief of specific muscle pain and dysfunction, injury prevention and treatment, and post-surgical rehabilitation.

Neuromuscular Therapy is used to address 5 key elements that cause pain:

  1. Ischemia:  Lack of adequate blood supply to muscles, causing hypersensitivity to touch

  2. Trigger Points:  Highly irritated nodes located within muscles which refer pain to other areas

  3. Nerve Compression or Entrapment:  Pressure on nerves caused by soft tissue, cartilage or bone

  4. Postural Distortion:  Muscular imbalance causing systematic overloading of one or more body areas

  5. Biomechanical Dysfunction:  Imbalance of the musculoskeletal system causing faulty movement patterns

Common conditions that can benefit from this treatment include muscle pain from herniated/bulging discs, migraine/tension headaches, chronic back/neck pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, whiplash injuries, rotator cuff strains, thoracic outlet syndrome, frozen shoulder, piriformis syndrome, etc.

Things to know:

  • Your initial session must be 90 minutes to allow time for a thorough assessment + bodywork. After the first session you can book 60 or 90 minute sessions.

  • This type of bodywork is done clothed (yoga or workout clothes work best; no jeans or underwire bras) and without lotion/oil.

  • Although NMT is technically a "deep tissue massage" modality, it is not about the depth of pressure, but rather the specificity of the muscle fibers being treated. Effective NMT does not necessarily require a lot of deep pressure or discomfort for the patient.

  • If you refer a friend and they book a service, you'll get 10% off your next service.
